Introduction
Los Compañeros is an immigrant resource center based in Durango, Colorado. Its purpose is to abolish anti-immigrant legislation. A phrase that sums up most of their beliefs is “Ningún ser humano es ilegal” which means “It is not illegal to be humanl”. They are dedicated to helping immigrants, including undocumented citizens, attain the basic needs of living in the United States; a driver’s license, health care, etc. They are also dedicated to exposing the ignorance in deporting working, lawful, undocumented residents to the public. They are determined to abolish the term “illegal immigrant” or “alien”.
During the internship I will be working on a project where I will explain the negatives of deporting an undocumented resident, using statistical data. I will be inventing a character to depicted this, who is a working individual, and a parent who does everything a native born citizen would; pay bills, buy groceries, pay taxes, etc. I will do a statistical analysis of all the money that the government would no longer be attaining from the individual, how much it would cost for the government to carry out the deporting process and all other variables involved in the process.
Aside from this project the only other task I know of at this point is answering the phone when my mentor is out of the office. My mentor will be Danny Quinlan.
Through this internship I hope to help undocumented residents living in the county to achieve the basic needs that any native born would be expected to have as well as advocate for the rights of immigrants, and take one small step forward to the end of immigration being considered illegal.
One of my other interests that has inspired me to intern at Los Compañeros is my obsession with foreign language. I enjoy studying foreign language and do so on a daily basis. I hope that I can progress my knowledge of the Spanish language. I consider fluency in foreign language an important asset, and I believe the learning of foreign languages is vital cultures to come together. I believe that the more people who you can reach out to in their native language, the more at peace the world can be.
I am very excited for this internship!
